Chapter Three

Following the strange young man down the stairs Meyna asked. “Who are you?”

“Who I am is of no true consequence, you wish for a guide to the lower levels then that is what I am.”

“Then what do we call you?” Rei asked in an irritated tone of voice.

The man merely smiled and waved a dismissive hand. “Like I said you don’t have to call me anything, but if you truly insist on a name then call me Alvis.”

“Alvis?” Meyna repeated.

He stopped to look at her. “Yes, do you not like this name, I can change it to something else if you’d like.”

“No that name is fine, Alvis works…” when he continued onwards Meyna frowned but kept quiet. There was something about him that felt very familiar.

“What’s up Meyna?” Rei asked in a soft voice.

“It’s… I don’t know, but I feel like I’ve heard that name somewhere before, but I can’t remember where.”

“Is Alvis a common name?”

“I don’t think so.”

“If you two are done whispering like thieves I do believe it would be best to keep going before something decided to attack us. Or do you want that to happen?”

The two of them looked at each other before continuing to follow him. When reaching the bottom of the stairs the three of them were met with not only a long hallway but robotic machines as well.

“What the heck are those things?” Rei asked in shocked confusion.

“They are machines, that is all.” Alvis said. “Long ago they were supposed to have stopped working; it’s rather surprising that they can still move.”

“Are they dangerous?” Meyna asked.

“Some are while others won’t bother with us. The ones in front of us however, they are attack-droids, we have a choice with this, we could fight them, or we could run.”

Again Meyna frowned; there was something here, in this place, calling to her, pulling her deeper into these strange ruins. “I want to keep going.”

“Meyna are you crazy?” Rei demanded once more. “Look at what’s ahead, why would you want to keep going in a creepy place like this?”

“I can’t explain it, but… something’s calling me. I can feel it. I don’t know what it is or why but I know something is here and I want to find out what before we leave.”

“You really think something’s here?”

She nodded. “I do,”

After a moment Rei sighed and wielded her spear-lance and shield. “Alright then, but I don’t know if I’d be able to keep you safe.”

Meyna took out her duel-swords. “I can handle myself; let’s just worry about defeating these… machines for now.”

“It seems we are all at a unanimous vote.” Alvis said as he revealed a claymore to the two of them. “Until you wish to leave I will also assist in fighting. After all I’m sure you’d need the help with this.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” Rei replied. “Look just keep being our guide for this and do what you think needs to be done but I’ll say it before you try anything funny and I’ll deck you.”

Alvis smiled. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

All three of them rushed forwards towards the robotic machines, many of which did in fact attack when the three of them got closer while others seemed to mind their own business. The fighting itself lasted for about ten minutes when the last of the machines crumpled to the ground in an electronic heap. They continued on, but not before Meyna took some scrap, she figured it’d be good for something back at the Colony.

On and on this went, the further they moved the more of these odd looking machines they had to face and defeat the deeper they went. There were five floors in total, with some rooms being large and others being small, along with a few hidden areas with some interesting things inside that they could bring back and sell at the Colony. On the fifth floor itself there was one type of machine that was larger than the rest, and though it had no face to speak of it almost looked rather intimidating. It was almost like it was programed to stop whoever tried to get in to the room that it was guarding.

But with one final swing from Alvis’s sword the giant machine came tumbling down. They were almost there, just behind that door, kept drawing her to it. Why she felt something important was here she didn’t know she only hoped that another one of those large machines wouldn’t be lying in wait for them when the door opened.

Alvis took a step forward and the doors automatically opened as cold air soon flooded the long hallway, clouds of their breath could be seen whenever they exhaled, the room was cold as if locked in some kind of ice age. Freezing everything in place, the technology, machines and other odd objects, but that wasn’t what drew Meyna.

Rei was the first to react when she saw it. “No way… is that… is that what I think it is?”

“It is,” Alvis added as he leaned against a wall with arms folded across his chest, silver eyes watching Meyna who remained silent. “Tell me Meyna, is this what you thought called to you? Compelled you to come down into a place when you knew you shouldn’t?”

Meyna remained silent, her aqua green eyes transfixed to what stood before her, an object of which that should have been destroyed, something that should haven’t existed any longer yet somehow remained.

“A Monado,” Meyna whispered still keeping her eyes on it. “Is it real?”

Alvis nodded and remained where he was. “Is it, or should I say was. In a time when there were gods.”

The Monado of which Alvis spoke, stood propped up in some type of holder, looking rusted and aged from time, as if could fall apart at any moment.

“But this shouldn’t be here,” Rei interjected. “I mean, why of all places is it here? I thought the Monado was enshrined in Colony 6’s memorial for those who died protecting the lives of Bionis and Mechonis?”

“It is indeed a Monado; however that Monado of which you speak of still remains in Colony 6, this Manodo belonged to a god, a god who has long since passed. A god by the name of Lady Meyneth.”

“Meyneth?” Rei repeated sounding rather confused.

Meyna looked away for a moment to look at Rei. “Lady Meyneth was the one who created the Machina, and the one who controlled the Mechonis while it moved. She did not wish to fight, she only wished for life of both Mechonis and Bionis to coexist in peace and harmony. She died hoping for this wish to come true.”

“You seem rather knowledgeable on that.” Alvis said with a hint of slight surprise in his rather calm voice.

“My brother never liked me leaving the Colony, so I’d often read about the history of what used to be before Shulk, and the others changed that. Defeating a god who wished to destroy everything in the pursuit of power.” She looked at him. “Alvis, why is this here? If I’m right the books that I’ve read claimed that the Monado’s wielded by these gods should have been destroyed long ago when the Bionis fell.”

Alvis’s smile vanished slightly. “It isn’t wrong, when Shulk and his allies beat the god, those two Monado’s were indeed destroyed, what you are looking at is the remnants of a long since destroyed past, an endless cycle of constant destruction and rebirth. A chain that eventually broke by that of a young Homs and his friends.”

As Alvis spoke Meyna found herself looking at the Monado once more, she felt compelled to get closer, this relic of a bygone era. Of a time when gods once existed, of power that could barely be comprehended, it made no sense as to why it was here in this strange place. Everything around her slowly began to become dull as sound slowly faded from her ears her vision turning a dark crimson red.

“Then what about the one from the Bionis?” Rei asked. “If this is the one from the Mechonis, what happened to the one from the Bionis?”

Alvis shrugged. “Who knows, I only know of this Monado, the other faded into obscurity, or perhaps something like this happened. Two young Homs discover it.”

Rei folded her arms across her chest and contemplated it. “Maybe, but if it was found you think someone may have mentioned it by now.” she turned Meyna. “What do you… Meyna!”

Meyna was reaching for the Monado, the pupils of her eyes dilated and hazed with red, she didn’t hear Rei’s words as she and Alvis rushed to her. But it was too late Meyna had placed her hand on the old relic and a bright flash of white light flooded the room.

Images flashed in Meyna’s mind of places and beings she had never met before, images of Telethia locked in a battle within a Colony Meyna saying something but her words not heard. A cloaked man, a woman with white hair holding Meyna up by the throat, back to when she was a child staring at someone while the fallen remains of a Telethia was behind her, those of the Machina race in front of a large statue of a woman and the Bionis and the Mechonis.

And a voice that echoed towards the end. “Let me in.”

Before the three were forced back from a sudden small shockwave. A shockwave that shook the entirety of the ruins and the ground above, causing those who lived in Colony 13 to become concerned as to what was happening.

Rei and Alvis looked to the Monado seeing jolts of electricity coursing through the rusted remains. “What the heck was that?”

Alvis didn’t speak, instead he looked to Meyna and saw for a brief moment of her eyes being that if a red haze before vanishing. Meyna groaned and sat up rubbing the side of her head, her mind throbbed with numbing pain; it felt as if her eyes were burning.

“Are you alright Meyna?” Alvis asked.

“I… yeah, what happened?”

“You touched the Monado is what you did.” Rei snapped. “Just because it no longer works doesn’t mean you should touch it, even I know that.”

Meyna frowned at her words. “I touched it?”

“Yeah, what you don’t remember?”

Meyna shook her head. “No, I don’t, I remember looking at it and then the next thing I
know I see these strange images.”

“You really don’t remember touching it?” Rei asked unsure if Meyna was telling the truth.

“I’m not lying!” Meyna snapped. “I don’t remember, honest.”

“She is telling the truth,” Alvis said calmly. “She was not aware of her actions before it was too late.”

“Then, what was that light?” the moment Rei asked that the sound of something caught all of their attention back to the Monado, they looked to see it crumble away into a pile of reddish brown dust.

“Oh no!” Meyna got up and rushed to the blade and sighed in reluctance. “That’s not good…”

“The sword was no longer of use in this world; even relics do not last forever.”

This world? Rei thought with a frown as she looked at him. What does he mean by that?

Alvis stood up and walked to stand by Meyna’s side. “Do not blame yourself, it was only a matter of time until this turned to dust.” He placed a hand on her shoulder and offered a slight smile. “Though I think now would be a good time to leave, wouldn’t you agree?”
She nodded in silent agreement.

It didn’t take long for the three of them to reach the entrance of the ruins Rei stretched her arms above her head. “Fresh air never smelled so good, we should get going before someone tries to go looking for you.”

“Yeah…” she looked back to see Alvis merely standing by the entrance. “Hey Rei go on ahead, I’ll catch up.”

Rei gave a questioning look but merely waved a dismissive hand. “Alright fine, just hurry up okay? Your brother might worry more than normal.”

When Rei was gone from sight Meyna approached Alvis. “Thank you for helping us.”

“No need,” he said with a shake of his head. “You merely looked as if you needed a guide in that place. So I merely aided in that, which evidently led you to Lady Meyneth’s Monado. Nothing more.”

“You never answered the question as to why that was there.”

“Must there be a reason?” he asked. “It was there, that’s all you need to know about it.” he paused when seeing the concerned look on her face. “What’s wrong?”

“Rei said I touched it, but I don’t remember doing that, and yet I saw something, images playing in my mind. Though I’m not entirely sure as to what it could mean.”

“You’ll find out. You may not know what it all means but you will someday.”

“I suppose…” with a sigh she turned and began to head in the direction that Rei went. “Anyway, thanks again for the help, it was nice meeting you.”

“It was good to meet you as well, Miss Anomaly. Let us meet again, in some other time.”

Meyna looked back only to find that Alvis was now gone. “Anomaly?”

“Hey Meyna!” Rei called out. “What’s keeping you?”

“Coming!” Meyna took off into the forest to catch up with her friend, unaware that someone in the shadows was watching her.

The two of them decided to walk all the way back to the Colony before it got dark, the sun was setting, casting a fiery look to the sky itself.

“Let’s never go back to that place ever again okay Meyna?”

“Yeah…” Rei arched a brow at Meyna’s delayed response.

“You think that old blade really was a Monado?”

“Possibly, but then I’m not sure. Right now I’m more concerned about…” She stilled, the hairs on her body rose up as she looked around the forest.

“Concerned about what?” Rei would have said more only Meyna covered her mouth making her quite. Rei made a muffled comment but saw the look on her friend’s face she instantly realized that something was wrong. Meyna glanced at her and placed her index finger to her lips telling Rei to be quite.

“Do you hear that?” She asked when moving away her hand.

“Hear what?”

Meyna, her breathing was shallow but the tension in her body was apparent, Rei didn’t know what her friend sensed; Grithiff had told Rei that at times Meyna could sense ill intent. Though it didn’t happen often, it had come in handy when it did.

Meyna and Rei ducked in behind nearby trees, the sounds of wildlife soon quietened to dead silence. A silence that did not last for long.

A low cry came out, and Rei soon saw something she didn’t expect, the Ether in area began to vanish to which meant only one thing.

A Telethia was nearby.

Meyna held her breath as she eyed the dying grass, her heart hammering wildly in her chest. Why is there a Telethia here? She thought. They shouldn’t be this far from the remains of the Bionis, was because of… the Monado that turned to dust? Was it drawn to that or… her thoughts stopped dead when she saw the Telethia, her eyes grew wide when she realized what kind it was.

A Telethia Donnis.

The same kind as the one which nearly destroyed her and her brother a long time ago, when they were fleeing from Colony 4, throbbing pain erupted in her skull, as if someone had a vise grip on her brain, it was so painful it made her vision blur as she quietly crouched down and clutched the sides of her head.

“Meyna what’s wrong?” Rei demanded in a hushed tone fearing to move in case the Telethia spotted them.

“It’s… nothing.” she said through gritted teeth. She tried to catch her breath as images once again ran through her mind, only this was of her childhood back when she and Grithiff ran through the night. A white flash of light came to her eyes next before the memory faded away. That light… what was that light? Have I seen it before but where?

The Telethia soon flew up into the air and moved on as Rei quickly rushed to aid her friend. “Meyna, what’s wrong what happened to you?”

“I’ll be fine,” Meyna said as Rei helped her stand up. “Right now we have a bigger issue then my health. A Telethia Donnis was here, a creature that shouldn’t be, we need to hurry back to the Colony and warn the Defence Force. If we don’t we might be in big trouble…”

“But Meyna you…”

“Don’t worry about me.” She snapped. “The Colony comes first, you know that. Now let’s hurry back.” I won’t let this happen, not again, I refuse to lose my home again to these creatures. But that light… what could that have meant?
And chapter 3 is now up, originally I would have posted it sooner only I realized I spelled Monado wrong ^^; and have to go back and even revise a few things, much like some of the other chapters I intend to fix more mistakes both minor and major later on, I also did some work behind the scenes for what will happen later on, what characters will appear and certain things that will be explained later on as it progresses :)

So they found Meyneth's Monado, while Zanza's disappeared, and that leaves Shulk's Monado which I'm guessing is the one enshrined (of course then there are those replica Monados).

Overall another good chapter and some nice set up for things to come, also Alvis  bonus points (honestly shoulda called that one).
